In cases of cartilage surface degeneration in the hip joint, or in certain instances of early-stage osteoarthritis where hip replacement is not yet necessary, it may be necessary to administer a “cartilage-strengthening” injection—that is, an injection of high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid injections have been used successfully for many decades to treat knee osteoarthritis. Its use in the hip joint is less widespread; one reason for this is that precise intra-articular injection can only be performed under X-ray or, in some cases, ultrasound guidance. Hyaluronic acid can be administered for secondary prevention, even on a regular basis, such as every few years.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 30–40 minutes, which is equivalent to two specialist consultations. An initial consultation is required in all cases prior to the procedure, but no other preliminary tests (lab tests, ECG) are necessary. A few minutes after the injection, the patient can leave on their own two feet; full physical activity is permitted after one or two days of rest.
